001 — About

StummSchalter is a Berlin-based experimental electronic duo formed by two brothers, Kirill and Nikolai Stepanov. Their work is dedicated to the rigorous exploration of sound through a methodology they term psycho-acoustic excavation. As the founders of Morpheus Radio and the avant-garde trio Elektricheskaya Sobaka, the duo operates at the intersection of technical precision and improvisational friction.

The project engages with conditions where habitual modes of listening lose stability. StummSchalter focuses on transitional points where auditory perception no longer functions in a consistent manner. Through the use of noise, sustained tones, and fragments of musique concrète, they create environments that foreground these perceptual shifts. Sound is treated not as a static object but as a set of conditions that modulate attention and spatial orientation.

In a live setting, the duo maintains a minimalist aesthetic centered on two figures at a table. Their sonic palette incorporates granular synthesis, doom-inflected drone, and high-velocity noise. This approach reflects their sustained engagement with sonic archives as curators and their history of performances at international institutions.

Their work has been presented at venues including Funkhaus, Morphine Raum, Arkaoda, and Studio DB in Berlin, as well as the Urvakan Festival in Yerevan, 20ft Radio in Kyiv, and various locations in Venice.

An upcoming release on the Berlin-based label LärmHaus.Berlin is currently in preparation.
